UNBROKEN CONNECTIONS
Rooted in abstractionism, many of artist Curtis Patterson’s works have been exhibited at sites both nationally and internationally, which include shows in the United States, France, Nigeria, Sweden and Italy. Emerging into the realm of publicly commissioned art in 1977, Patterson has produced large-scale sculptures and site-specific pieces for many venues across the United States. From parks and urban landscapes to international airport and prominent downtown settings his compositions seamlessly merge elements of antiquity and modernity. Concurrent with much of his early career in art fabrication, he was, also, a professor of sculpture and design at The Atlanta College of Art (now SCAD) for thirty years.
Often influenced by improvisational Jazz and elements from the natural environment, Patterson’s projects include mid-to-intermediate scale sculptural works as well as multiple series of prints and drawings. His intrigue with developing invitational sculptural works is evident through his continuous explorations and command of three-dimensional space and objects and two-dimensional areas in a manner that prompts viewer curiosity. He enjoys his audiences being able to physically access and experience his pieces and frequently embeds subtle surprises within his work as a reward for those who are motivated to explore and discover.
An 'unbroken connection' with his ancestral lineage is apparent in several of Patterson’s abstract creations, whose symbolism and elements often imbue the beauty and elegance of African iconography. He pays homage with his art not only to humanitarians, musicians, and athletes, but also to those unsung individuals and groups who have made tremendous contributions and consequential sacrifices through their social service, domestic work and manual labor.
